RotatoCAM + AtomStack C4 Pro: Rotary Work, Step by Step

RotatoCAM + AtomStack C4 Pro: Rotary Work, Step by Step
(Version française plus bas / French version below)
A plain walkthrough for getting your C4 Pro cutting rotary parts with RotatoCAM. No jargon,
no assumptions. Read it once all the way through before touching the machine.

The honest warning first. The C4 Pro post was built from a real C4 Pro controller,
but as of today no RotatoCAM program has physically cut on one. You are the test pilot.
That means: run your first programs in the air (tool far above the work) and keep your
hand on the e-stop. The G-code is a suggestion. You are the machinist.

Part 1 — Set up the machine (once)
Mount the rotary so its axis runs parallel to the machine’s X axis (left-right).
The chuck spins the stock; the cutter stays upright.
Chuck the stock: grip at least 15-20 mm of the bar in the jaws. If the part is long
or thin, support the far end (tailstock or live center) or expect chatter.
Know your A axis. On the C4 Pro the rotary is a true A axis in degrees: A90 turns
the chuck a quarter turn. RotatoCAM already knows this. You never convert anything.
Pick your sender (Candle or whatever you already use for the C4). RotatoCAM writes
the G-code file; the sender streams it. RotatoCAM never connects to the machine.
Part 2 — Set up RotatoCAM (once)
Open Settings ▸ Machine setup and fill in what your machine really is:
X / Y / Z travel (how far each axis can move)
Max swing radius: the biggest part radius that clears between chuck and cutter
Chuck diameter and chuck offset (how far the chuck face sits from your X zero)
Rotary runs along: X
In the Post / controller box choose “AtomStack C4 Pro (Grbl 1.1h, native A)”.
This post pins the rotary letter to A and speaks the C4’s exact dialect. Done.
One quirk worth knowing: on this controller the cutting speed varies a little with the
part’s radius (slower near the centerline, faster at the surface). That is a property of
the controller’s feed mode, it is expected, and it is safe.
Part 3 — The job, every time
Load your STL (the model button). In the strategy panel, set “Model’s long axis”
to whichever axis of the FILE runs along the part’s length. If the preview lays the part
down the wrong way, this is the setting you got wrong.
Stock: choose a round bar, set its diameter and length. “Recommend stock”
fills in a sane blank from the model. Bar length includes the gripped part.
Tool: enter the cutter you will actually use: type (ball / flat), diameter, flute
length. A ball nose is the usual choice for 3D rotary finishing.
Strategy, keep it simple:
4-axis rough (radial) first: hogs the bar down close to shape.
4-axis finish (spiral) second: the workhorse finishing pass, part turns
continuously, smooth surface.
If RotatoCAM warns the part “cannot be cut this way” (arms, overhangs, undercuts),
switch to 4-axis indexed 3+1 with 8-12 faces instead. The warning tells you.
Work zero (touch off): X0 at the LEFT end of the cutting area, Y0 on the bar’s
centerline, and Z: pick “Top of stock” in the work-zero panel, then touch the tool
to the top of the bar. The G-code header repeats where it expects zero: read it.
Safe Z: a clearance ABOVE the bar surface (10 mm is comfortable). Retracts go there.
Press Generate. Now VERIFY, in this order:
Read every warning in the log. They are written in plain language on purpose.
Look at the backplot (green = cutting, red = rapids). Does it look like your part?
Press Simulate and watch the material-removal sim carve the bar.
Export the .nc file and open it in your sender.
First run = air cut. Zero the tool 30-50 mm ABOVE the real zero and run the whole
program in the air. Watch: does the rotary turn? Do the moves look right? Nothing dives?
Only then: re-zero on the stock, spindle on, feed override low, hand on the e-stop.
Golden rule: the simulator is good, but wood and aluminum do not have an undo button.

mince, supporte l’autre bout (contre-pointe), sinon ça va vibrer.
continu, surface lisse.
Si RotatoCAM avertit que la pièce « cannot be cut this way » (bras, surplombs,
contre-dépouilles), passe à 4-axis indexed 3+1 avec 8-12 faces. L’avertissement
« annuler ».
